Steps you can take

  • Start the conversation! Talk to anyone you can so that they recognise that CUP exists and that it is a significant but little known phenomenon. Explain that it is a problem which is resolvable but only if there is a demand for action. It may seem a minority problem to doctors and researchers but it is hugely significant to those who are touched by it. The number of people in the UK diagnosed with CUP each year is roughly equivalent to 25 jumbo jets full of people! If 25 jumbo jets fell out of the sky each year over the UK because the reason could not be traced you can be sure that people would take notice and demand action.
  • Point CUP patients and carers at this website! We have been told that it is a valuable resource by patients, carers, and oncologists.
  • Get Cancer Charities to “think CUP”! At the moment many major Cancer charities are hardly aware of CUP and do not recognise it as an issue. If you are a supporter of a cancer charity ask them what they are doing about CUP. If you are donating money or leaving a legacy you might want to encourage them to “ring-fence” it for something that will benefit CUP research or CUP patients. This may not always be possible but we have already done this with a significant donation to Cancer Research UK. Even if it is not possible, you are reinforcing the message to them of “thinking CUP”.

Jo's friends actively support Cancer Research UK and Cancerbackup. In 2007 three of Jo's Friends ran in CRUK's Race for Life to raise money for CRUK and awareness of Jo's Friends. They set a target figure of raising £1,000 and this was exceeded within a week.

Obviously, we like people to undertake events for Jo's friends and raise money for our work. See Support our work for details.
